One thing to keep in mind about shared hosting is that due to the fact that everything is shared, what affects one person affects everybody. This includes any safety threat or virus, as it will hit more than just its intended target.

With a virtual private server you have more privacy. Although it comes at a bit of a higher cost, you have a lot more control over things like installed programs and operating systems. With a virtual private server you also have control over firewalls and configuration, but within the limits the owner of your server sets. What this basically means is that you can’t be harmed by the other people on your server.

This isn’t to totally rule out shared hosting. Really, there are some people that do well with handling control. There are other people who would rather have others do things for them. If you are not so great with technology, and all you need is just the basics when it comes to disk space and bandwidth, you may be better off finding a reliable service for shared hosting than dealing with the technological hassle of a virtual private server.

If you want to avoid some issues with shared hosting, you should get your own IP address. This way you can accept credit cards on your ecommerce site, and you won’t have to worry about the search engines punishing you just because a spammer is using your IP. With a dedicated IP you will also get better search engine listings and anonymous FTP downloads. If you invest just a little bit of extra money you can get some added security, not to mention all the extra features that are perfect for any webmasters.

However, keep in mind that you can’t even get the same security from a dedicated server that you can from a virtual private server. Furthermore, there are a lot of inexpensive plans out there for you to choose from. Some of them even start out as low as a month. You will find that this is generally the cost for even a shared hosting plan.

In general, if you are looking for hosting for personal use, or just on a small scale, you would probably be okay with just a shared hosting plan. However, if you are expecting your business to grow at any time, you would be better off to choose VPS hosting.

Before you upgrading your account, you must understand what VPS and dedicated hosting is so you will not make a mistake of upgrading to the wrong service.

VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting

VPS, just like its name is a server that runs on a virtual environment set in a host server. So one host server is partitioned and in each partition runs one VPS server, this type of web hosting is more powerful than shared hosting because you will have more resource dedicated to you. VPS acts like a full server so you can install your operating system of choice and also its supporting application, not all application can run on virtual environment especially anti virus program so make sure all your application can operate on a virtual environment.

You need to have some technical expertise to run a virtual server because it acts like a real server, you have to maintain it like a real server too so you need to know how to install updates, troubleshooting and other software maintenance.

VPS is your choice if your website need more space (ex. for your collection of hundreds high resolution pictures) and for web developers to host their web projects because VPS can be set to their requirements.

Dedicated Server/Hosting

On dedicated hosting, you lease an entire server for your website and off course this also means you have a full server capability that is not shared with anyone at your disposal.

Dedicated server/hosting allow you to set the server based on your preference such as operating system, installed applications, and what service is running. There’s also type of service for dedicated server the unmanaged and managed service.

The unmanaged service means that after the service provider installed your operating system, application that you requested and after they give you a way to remotely maintain your server you are left alone. Technical knowledge is a must because you maintain your server by yourself. On the other hand, the managed service is where the service provider take care all the server maintenance for you, this service is more expensive, but recommended for you who have no or limited technical skill.

Dedicated server/hosting is suggested for large e-commerce websites and websites with heavy multimedia task such as streaming audio and video, these kinds of websites need more resource and reliability that only a dedicated server can provide.

When your website performance start to degrading don’t take the risk of staying with shared hosting, it will take more money, but it’s better than losing your visitors and customers. Use dedicated server if you have a large e-commerce or multimedia websites and use VPS if you need more space for your multimedia files or if you are a web developer, to host your web projects.
